Commission Unit - Graphics

These are the graphics that I created for the show as referenced on my blog:

The first one was used for the titles of Noye's Fludde. On the video I put this image to left with a mask to feather it so that it could blend with the black background. Since we decided to make the rainbow the main visual focus, I photoshopped the picture using the section tool and setting everything to Black and White, so that it looked like only the rainbow had color. This is the before and after:

Before

After

Another effect that I created was the a compilation of the logos of the patterns from ACT that contributed in the project. Amie told me which ones to include and I got the logos from their website. This is how it looked:

The next visual that I created was the graphic before the titles that says "an ACT production." For this one I used After Effects. I decided to get one of the pictures we had (the violin) and put it on the left side and as with the rainbow picture, create a mask around it, feather the edges so that it blended with the black background. After that I created the text on the right adding some keyframes so that it would appear word by word. Here is how it looked in the end:

The next and most interesting graphic were the the Lower Thirds. These ones were based on the rainbow effect as well and combined the colors of the rainbow with the black and white tone that was given to the movie as well. For this I used After Effects and created a solid for every single rainbow color. I added keyframes for the positions to give the effect that they were all coming one after the other to create a rainbow in 3 seconds or less. A very interesting issue that I encounter with this, was that I had to make sure I created an alpha channel (transparent background) so that I could take it into Final Cut Pro and put the clip on top of the interview. In order to do this the file needs to be exported in an Animation format with alpha channel, which will not add a white or black background to the final video. This is a screenshot of the project that can explain exactly what I did if its read properly:

The last one but not least, was the credits. I decided to create something interesting as I hate the default preset credits on Final Cut Pro, they are horrendous. For this I created my own on After Effects, which ended up leading to a more customize video. Once again I was based on the rainbow which is the reason why I created to rainbows to the sides, making it look like they are the the beginning and the end of the frame. I created them with the same way as the lower thirds and added a mirror effect to invert the rainbow on the right side. The text was created with keyframes giving it a starting and ending point, grouping it with the images (logos) in a composition so that they moved with the text at the same time. I had to create 3 compositions for this: one for the creation of the rainbows, one for the text and another to put both together and add the movement. This is a still of how it looked like on my screen:

Studio Production - Graphics

One of the tasks I took was the creation of some graphics for the show. We needed to show people some polls that were created on the website and also some images that were going to be mentioned during the show. I based my concept on something simple which included the logo of the show on the background with a Gaussian Blur effect and then the image in the with a white frame. All the images had to be of a Targa file format (.tga) because that was the only format supported by the visual mixer. Thanks to Fergus and Alex, I managed to know the specifications of the file which were a 720x576, Targa, without alpha channels. Here are all the graphics that I created in the respected format and resolution:

Studio Production - Final Idea Research Part 2

After coming up with the concept of my idea, I took into account something that teacher Helen mentioned me, which was to have research and facts behind my games. The idea was not to just throw some games into the show because they were funny or complicated, but because there was something that linked them all and gave them a purpose of why they should be on the show. At this stage I had to think of a way to link all my games and decide which type of games I wanted to go with in the end. It took me a while to get an idea of what exactly was that I wanted to do, but in the end my idea was to use the human senses to give the show a "sense."

My idea was based on creating a 30 min show based on 5 different games, in which each one was to test the senses:

Sight

Smell

Hearing

Taste

Touch

After deciding what to base my game on, I chose my games and started doing research on them as well. Here the example on one of my games

Chareyes Test

This game, as the name suggests, is a combination between Charades and an eye test. The concept of this game to have some sort of charades where both teams had their own time and whoever scored more in the allotted time, wins. The research behind this was a way of testing the sight on people for real and I ended finding that the most effective way, which is what is most commonly used, is the Snellen chart for adults:

With that said, the concept of the game got based on seeing a word in 20/30 from the appropriate distance to play charades and at the same time test the eye sight.

Studio Production - Camera Script

After so many versions and a long session of practicing the right movements and times, I came up with a camera script for my half of the show which was based on a format that Hans provided to us. I had to study it to understand how it worked and I asked at some point for advice to Fergus and teacher Helen for some terms that I didn't understand like F/O (face out). This was the final version of that script:

Studio Production - CAFT

One of the big things I had to deal with with Andy was the CAFT team, which were the ones that built the set for us for free. As part of their unit, they had to do a commission which was based on doing some work for someone. Andy, Helen, teacher Helen and I went to the UCA Rochester campus to have a presentation in which we would try to convince as many as possible to make building our set their commission. The first problem we had was that only half of the actual second years were there as the other half were on a trip in Barcelona. We had some issues with the presentation at first because we left Andy to do it but it seems he didn't include some things that teacher Helen told him to. Gladly we saved that presentation and pulled up as much stuff as possible and we had about 4 people interested in the project. After explaining the project a bit more in depth with one of their tutors, Fionna Watts, she tried to get more people involved in it. In the end only about 5 people were actually involved in it which was a bit of a shame, but ended up doing the job.

For a second meeting with them I wasn't able to attend because I had to do something that required my attention. They showed a prototype of what they were going to build which was quite impressive and accurate to what we showed them and what we wanted for our set. After everything was set, they had 2 weeks to build the whole thing in which Andy and I went to check that everything was going according to the plan. The big problem was that overtime we went all we saw were the wood structures of all the things that were going in the background, which wasn't good because all we saw was wood wood and more wood.

Some of the issues on the day were that first, a table that was showed to us in the prototype and that we requested, wasn't build at all for some reason. They said that we didn't tell them it was needed, but  they showed is what they were going to build and we requested it, so until we tell them not to build it I don't see a reason why they didn't. We had to rush after a long drama to get a table for the set, which was brought from the UCA Rochester campus. Another one of the issues was that the TV didn't fully fit on the stand that they build. I also got quite annoyed about that because Andy and I went up there and checked that they had taken measurements of the TV and someone in a very unprofessional way spoke to me as if they had everything under control and I was dumb for asking. After that, I had all the reason in the world to be upset about the TV not fitting as we asked and got an unfortunate reply from one of the students. In the end the TV stayed on the stand with 1/4 of it having out of it, but gladly it didn't fall and everything was fine.

Studio Production - Photoshop

One of the topics for discussion on the show, was the use of photoshop and how people reacted to it. As part of the production team, we decided to include a segment during the debate where each of the panelists was to have a picture of themselves photoshopped to either make them look good or take something away from them that would get them shocked or angry. Ruby and I were chosen to be in charge of the photoshop while some on the promo or VT team to take the pictures. The first issue there was that it wasn't clear who was in charge of the pictures and getting the people to the studio to actually get their pictures taken. With that said, only Rory and Beth got a picture taken as it was unorganised properly and Jordan wasn't told to go. Ruby and I decided to split the job and she would do Beth and I was to do Rory.

It was quite a fun task as I had removed spots and make skin look more soft before, but never actually got to remove tattoos. It was quite hard at the beginning as the picture was very out of focus as I mentioned on my report. This was the original picture

The first thing I did was to raise the brightness and saturation of it to give it more light and a bit more colour as the quality of the picture was very poor. The other bit was to remove the tattoos. For that I watched a couple of videos that showed a bit of how to remove tattoos and work with body shape. This one here was probably the most useful video. It showed me how to use the patch tool, which ended up being my best friend when it came down to it.

This other video was a bit longer than the other but it shows you how to retouch someone with a bit of a better light, shape the body, make them look more soft. I struggled using a lot of features from that video and things i knew how to do already because of how the picture is out of focus, but I think that in the end I did the best job I could do with what I was given.
